Patrick started playing chess after the Kasparov v Short match in 1993 fired his imagination on teletext (remember that?). He played for Fareham Chess Club in Hampshire for 15 years and was forced into becoming President of the Club at gunpoint in 2006.
Patrick was born in the Midlands but left in 1974, returning to Rugeley in 2009. He was a hospital doctor in the 1980s but for the last 25 years has been involved in medical research. He lives with his wife Jean and they have two grown up sons. When not working or playing chess, he listens to classical music, gets lost on Cannock Chase looking for the Plaza or sits in the Billy Wright stand pondering lost endgames.
